Kirkby, William 1a

Birth Name Kirkby, William
Gramps ID I0030
Gender male
Age at Death 52 years

Narrative

Rev William Kirkby was eldest of 6 children born to Rev John Kirkby and Nancy Fayrer.
He was born in Sheerness in 1828. (He does not feature in any Census records for his father Rev John, but as first child would have been at school in 1841, aged 13).
Married in 1855 aged 27 to Kate Maria Anna Borroughs Nash, age 22, in Aylesford.
They soon have their first child John in 1856, and then Jane Mary is born there in 1858.
By 1860 Rev William is Chaplain of the Royal Victoria Patriotic Asylum and they are living at 5 Heathfield Gardens on Wandsworth common (nice house and location).
They have a third child in 1860, son Marsh, then Kate, Ida, and William are born there in 1862, 1863, and 1864.
In 1866 they have a daughter Nancy Fayrer (named after Rev William’s mother, further proving his pedigree) but she dies the next year.
Monica is born there in 1868, and finally Paul in 1870.
Rev William is aged 43 when in the 1871 census he records 7 of them living at “Patriotic School Chaplin House, All Saints, Wandsworth” (Have they moved the 400 meters temporarily? Is there a problem with the house, or do they deliberately use the nearby school address? A search for Heathfield Gardens on the 1871 census is missing #5).
By the 1881 Census Rev William is dead and likely died in 1880 (citation needed) aged 52.

In 1881 his widow Kate Maria Anna Boroughs is living at “Park Town Langdale House, Oxford St Giles, Headington” (site not yet located), with sister (in law) Mary Jane, and children Marsh, Ida, and Monica, along with three boarders and two domestic servants.
Kate Maria Anna Borroughs puts her occupation down as schoolmistress, she is about 48 years old.
In the 1891 Census Kate is at 10 Rawlinson Road, St Giles, Headington, Oxfordshire (is this the same location renamed?)
She now claims to be age 52 (DOB at wedding was 1833, so more like 58) is retired and lists “living on own means”.
She is there with her son Marsh (age 30, Clerk in holy orders), William (26, Medical student), Kate (24), Maria (22), and Paul (20, Scholar Hert Coll oxon), as well as two pupils, a cook and two house maids.
Kate dies in Oxford in April that same year 1891 claiming to be 54, and is buried in St Mary’s church, Cholsey.

Narrative

In our Will for Rev John Kirkby a “Rev Wm” is referred to as "son" and receives less than his younger siblings (probably because he did not need the same help as the others).

He features in our Will documents in Sept 1880 entry for Rev John, though why it is dated then is uncertain since Rev John died in 1862, it’s possible William's death sparked the re-visit.

There is more info on the Will in his father, Rev John Kirkby's, notes.
