Records for Tullythwaite - with variations on the name - have been found going back to 1300s. (see later notes)

Tullythwaite House dates from circa 1820 but the tannery is from the 1600s.

"Little Tullythwaite" is about 700 mtr walk south of Tullythwaite House and existed in at least 1743 according to our records, and probably a lot earlier. It was closer to the tannery and may have been a stay when working there before the House was built.

Tullythwaite Hall is about 50 mtrs south of Little Tullythwaite. Tullythwaite Hall was the property of Miles Bateman in 1600s and where the infamous Quaker George Fox visited. As far as we know, Kirkbys were not involved with ownership of the Hall at any time.

Note that Tranthwaite at some point also referred to Tullythwaite. First note of this is a 1548 mention of “lands and tenements in Underbarrowe, called Tullytwhate alias Trantwhate”.

Name confusion:

The following names are different locations within walking distance of each other: Tullythwaite, Tullythwaite House, Tullythwaite Garth, Tullythwaite Cottage, Little Tullythwaite, and Tullythwaite Hall.

In archive references it can be confusing which is being discussed, the Hall and House become easily mixed up, not to mention the many spelling variations. We assume it is the Hall unless "House" or "Little" is specifically added in the mention, or if we already know where the reference is for.

Kirkbys at Tullythwaite House:

Both George Kirkby (b.1708) and his son William (b.1745) referred to themselves as "of Little Tullythwaite". (this was in the time before Tullythwaite House was built)

Tullythwaite House was built circa 1820, though the tannery existed before it. (dated to 1636 according to - https://archaeologydataservice.ac.uk/archsearch/record?titleId=2889163 )

(From the time Tullythwaite House was built circa 1820 to 1837, more research is needed to know who owned it, who built it, and who lived in it.)

George Kirkby (b.1784) - the son of William (b.1745) and grandson of George (b.1708) - was married to Mary Clark in 1834. They lived at Tullythwaite House from at least 1837 and though Mary died in 1838, George and his children were still there through the 1841 and 1851 Census. His occupation was listed as "Tanner" in some archives, and on the Census as "County Treasurer", he likely was both.

In 1835 George had his only son George, who later chose to become a Reverend rather than follow in the tannery or treasurer trade. Daughters Mary and Elizabeth were listed as "unmarried" and still living at Tullythwaite House in 1861 Census.

In 1854 a Mr Kirkby (could be George snr or jnr) took out an advert in Westmorland Gazette To Let the tannery (image here). It's known that the 1850 completion of Kendal Canal negatively impacted local businesses, and this likely influenced the decision to let it. Whether his son, George's, choice of career had an influence is not known, but George snr was getting on in years and died in 1860.

In 1860 - the year George snr (b.1784) died - Rev George jnr (b.1835) inherited Tullythwaite House and sometime before that had married his cousin Jane Mary, who was the daughter of Rev John Henry Kirkby (b.1780). But she had died by 1861 when on the Census Rev George puts "widower". This marriage was likely a way to help keep both High Cragg and Tullythwaite House in the Kirkby family lineage. A similar arrangement had been made for High Cragg between Rev John's son and their brother Henry's daughter for that property.

Rev George Kirkby (b.1835) - son of George (b.1784) - was head of household at Tullythwaite House on the 1861 Census record. His occupation was "B A without cure of souls" which meant he was ordained without a parish. This, and the lack of agricultural workers on the census, suggests they were no longer using the tannery.

The house allegedly stayed in the family at least to the 1920s when Elda Mary Kirkby, and possibly her sister Maud Elizabeth, were orphaned and seemingly were sent to live with their "Aunts" there. (Elda later built a house in South Africa and named it after "Tullythwaite" because she had loved it so much).

Confusingly, the 1871 Census has a Michael Rayne and family living at Tullythwaite House. The next 3 Census have not yet been located for the premises.

The 1911 Census has a John Ross and family living there. This is at odds with our records and needs further research as to why we have incorrect or confusing information. Presumably Kirkby daughters married into these family names at some point.

More research is needed to confirm when, why, and to whom it was sold. A family note suggests a family descendant "May? Ridley" was connected to "Tullythwaite" at a later date (see image).

1635 - regards Miles Bateman of Tranthwaite and a Miles Bateman of Tullythwaite granting use to Robert Brigges, tanner and George Warde of Tranthwaite as well as his son Randall (Randulph?) Bateman, (Tranthwaite at that time might well have been Tullythwaite House area).

"So being seised the said Miles Bateman by his Indenture dated 22 December, 11 Charles I (1635) made between the said Miles Bateman of Tranthwaite, gentleman, of the one part and Miles Bateman of Tullithwaite, co. To have and to hold to them and their heirs to the use of said Miles, father of Randulph, for his life and after his death to use of said Randulph his son and heir and the heirs of his body lawfully to be begotten, in default of such to use of Thomas Bateman brother of said Miles and heirs of his body etc., for default of such to use of right heirs of said Miles for ever. By force of the Statute of uses Miles Bateman was seised of the premises for term of his life and after his death the said Randulph Bateman his son and heir long before and on the day of his death was seised of the premises in his demesne as of fee tail with remainders as above said and by reason of the minority of the said Randulph heir of Miles all the premises came to the king's hands and so remain as is said."

1636 - Issue regards Miles Bateman of Tranthwaite and a Miles Bateman of Tullythwaite. Relates to 1635 mention. Includes granting to Robert Brigges, tanner and George Warde of Tranthwaite as well as his son Randall Bateman who also has to pay his sister Katherine money for it, (Tranthwaite at that time might well have been Tullythwaite House area).

"Inquest taken at Kirkbie Kendall, 16 December, 12 Charles I (1636) before Henry Harrison, gentleman, escheator. The jurors say that: Miles Baitman, of Tranthwaite, gentleman, was seised of a capital messuage and tenement called Tranthwaite, 30 a. land, 10 a. meadow, 10 a. pasture thereto belonging; 9 messuages and tenements and 12 cottages in Tranthwaite in Underbarrowe and of 30 a. land, 6 a. meadow, 10 a. pasture thereto belonging in the occupation of customary tenants there; and also of a messuage and tenement, 4 a. land in Bradley Feild in the possession of Edward Backster, customary tenant there. So seised, Miles Baitman granted the said premises as follows: Indenture made 22 December, 11 Charles I (1635) between Miles Bateman of Tranthwaite, gentleman, of the one part and Miles Bateman of Tullithwaite, shearman, Robert Brigges of the same, tanner, and George Warde of Kirkbie Kendall, yeoman, which witnesses that Miles Bateman has granted to Bateman, Briggs and Warde the capital messuage and tenement in Underbarrowe called "Tranthwaite" and his said messuages, lands and tenements there, and all other his lands, tenements and grounds there, to the use of himself and his assigns for life and after his death to the use of Randall Bateman his son, and the issue of his body lawfully begotten, and in default to Thomas Bateman, brother of the said Myles and the issue of his body etc., and in default to the right heirs of the said Myles for ever, upon condition that Randall Bateman and his heirs shall pay to Katherine Bateman, daughter of said Miles and sister of said Randall, £200 when she is 21 years of age and £10 yearly in the mean time towards her maintenance, and in default of such payment, to Katherine's use till payment be made. Miles Bateman died 25 December last (1635)."

1671 - Mention of Tullithwayte: "Miles Bateman of Tullithwayte". (This is likely the infamous "unlawful" Quaker meeting held by Miles Bateman at the Hall)

In the vol 3 section on Underbarrow https://www.british-history.ac.uk/kendale-barony/vol3/pp166-169
